Kurara: Shibuya
Kurara Audio Arts could easily win a dream shop prize. Not only does it contain things usually seen only in dreams, but it seems to exist in the logic of dreams.

Virtually located in the back of Shibuya's Yamate Church parking garage, it first appears to be a storage facility, or remote efficiency apartment. And until you actually set eyes upon owner DJ Nogai Noriyasu you may feel as though you've accidentally stumbled into someone's very cool living room.

Kurara is for the most part Nogai's private collection up for sale. It's not strictly a music shop (though it is predominantly filled with extremely rare records and CDs), but a look into the intermingling of art and music. One wall contains hard-to-find books, videos and museum catalogs directly and indirectly relating to the recordings in the bins. The links aren't always apparent, but the odd juxtapositions at Kurara create the most interesting pairings: eg. Russian Constructivism and Busby Berkeley musicals.

A majority of the music here falls into the Avant Garde genre, but the broad interpretation of that term by Nogai allows for plenty of room for jazz, blues, jive, sound effects, and even cartoon soundtracks. Some featured artists are Sun Ra, William S Burroughs, Merzbow and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Allow yourself plenty of time for a trip to Kurara. It's very easy to get lost in its logic.

Kurara opens in the early afternoon and is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
