Neko Livin: Daiba
Feline fine

The Japanese have always had an odd thing about animals. The "Dog Shogun" forbade the killing of all critters and set up kennels at public expense to house 100,000 dogs. Yet in today's Tokyo, pets of any kind are about as welcome in most apartments as unaltered safety data at a TEPCO nuclear plant.

For apartment dwellers seeking creaturely diversion from cockroaches scampering the walls and crows holding forth from utility poles, Cats Livin offers its furry services.

Cats Livin was made with the avid cat lover in mind. Those deprived of feline attention can come here and fondle to their heart's content the eighteen cats on duty. They can also view the better class of cat - separated from the general riffraff, rarer breeds are here to be admired, showcased in their separate boxes. And here there are some real beauties, such as the cool, sleek Russian Blue and the frankly magnificent Norwegian Forest Cat - a Venus in Fur if ever there was one.

If Cats Livin is a feline idea of interior design, one can only hope that cats never get to take over the world. A room of fifties Californian plastic chic adjoins one deconstructed effort where the main design theme seems to be discarded computer innards. The next room is, well, indescribable except that it involves lavish shades of pink and cream and looks like something went disastrously wrong with a giant strawberry sundae.

A visit to Cats Livin and the adjoining cat goods' shop ought to more than satisfy anyone's small furry needs. If you come away from here still craving things feline, then - really - it's not cats you need, but professional advice.
