Though amazon.com finally broke Yohan's overpriced monopoly on foreign books in Tokyo, a browse through well-organized shelves of real books is a pleasure and price be damned. The heft of a book in hand or the smoothness of pages between fingers with the immediate gratification of a purchase is sometimes worth the extra cost.

Tuttle bookstore, one of the oldest English-language bookstores in the city, has recently had a facelift. Not exactly New York's Rizzoli yet, but the spirit is there. The shelves have been totally reorganized around themes such as design, spirit and mind, symbol, idea, eros, architecture, photo, cultural studies, media studies, ethnic, interior, and home. Books you'll find nowhere else in Tokyo are here. The space is small, very browsable, and filled with hip titles. Ask for a member's card and get a discount.
