L'abeille is a hungry bear's dream -- honey, honey, and more honey -- 42 kinds of honey, to be exact. This charming little shop stocks liquid sunshine from France, Japan, Spain, Hungary, New Zealand, and Vietnam. The French honeys range from the pale gold of acacia to the nearly black "forest" honey. With the "Haute Montagne," high mountain, honey you can almost taste the alpine air and feel the sun on your face. The "Fleurs Sauvages," wild flower, honey brings a meadow to your mouth. The exotic Vietnamese honey made from coffee flowers is very unusual. The gingery Manuka honey from New Zealand is the best seller.
Each of the 42 honeys can be tasted from the convenient dispensers arranged along the curtained windows. If you want your honey in your pot, it can be dispensed from immense storage jars behind the counter. Beeswax, candles, bee pollen, and royal jelly are also available.
Once you start tasting these honeys, it's difficult to stop. Small 125 gram jars go for about 500 yen. A gift pack of three in a tiny little wooden crate would make a great Christmas gift for your favorite editor.
L'abeille is 5 minutes from Ogikubo station. Take the north exit. Cross the main busy street and go left. Just before the Dai-ichi Kangyo Bank turn right on the narrow shopping street, Kyokai dori. Walk down to the bend in the road at the Shimizu barbershop. Bear to the left and L'abeille will be some 100 meters down on your left.
